I grew up in New York City, having Ornette Coleman as a stepfather. Thelonious Monk often woke me up, playing my mother and Ornette a tune on "my" beat-up old upright piano at three A.M. Both my mother and her sister broke ground as the first women working professionally and full- time in New York’s music business, working their way up - first as secretaries, and later in many roles particular to jazz. My mother was Ray Charles’ personal assistant, helping to initiate his Tangerine Records. My aunt worked alongside Quincy Jones. The Village Vanguard was my earliest baby-sitter, as both women also helped with booking there, as well as at the original Five Spot Café and The Village Gate. Recording sessions and rehearsals also were fertile training grounds for my later photo work. ...

Spanish/Nat Cuba's small Jewish community has denied reports of a secret operation to settle Cuban Jews in Israel under an agreement that had the apparent blessing of President Fidel Castro. Jose Miller, president of the Jewish Community House of Cuba, insists that all Jews who wish to settle in the Jewish state must go through the normal immigration channels. Israel on Monday reported that 400 Cuban Jews had been brought to the country in the past five years as part of a secret operation. The move was said to have had the blessing of Cuban leader Fidel Castro. A Jewish agency official - speaking on condition of anonymity - earlier this week said another 200 were waiting to come. The official added that there were concerns that publicity about the agreement would harm the...

All week long, they look forward to Sunday night, when they can let themselves go on the worn-out dance floor of a dance club called "La Esquina Habanera." This is the only place in the U.S. where the authentic rumba is celebrated. Cuba connoisseurs describe it as "one of America's best kept secrets". The characters know the secret of this club, which is just an ordinary diner on weekdays. The rumba is the least well-known yet the most sensual and original form of Cuban music and dance. When the Spanish rulers abolished slavery in the mid-19th century, the true Afro-Cuban rumba that we know today emerged: its ...

Wide shot Delegates raising hands and voting on motion STORYLINE: Cuban lawmakers held a minute of silence on Thursday for Hurricane Katrina victims and expressed solidarity with the mostly impoverished black and Hispanic Americans affected by the devastating storm. President Fidel Castro was among more than 500 members of the National Assembly who stood silently at the start of a regular session to remember the hundreds believed to have died this week when Katrina ravaged New Orleans, Louisiana, and other US coastal communities on the Gulf of Mexico. "This news causes pain and sadness for the Cuban people," said a resolution lawmakers unanimously approved. "In their name, we wish to express our profound solidarity with the people of the United States, state and local authorities and the victims of this catastrophe. "The entire world should feel this tragedy as if it were their own," it concluded. National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon read the resolution and immediately followed with an exhortation to parliaments and congresses worldwide to assist Cuba in the return of five Cuban agents imprisoned in the U.S. and the extradition of convicted terrorist Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela. "We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, and Rene Gonzalez. We demand the extradition to Venezuela of Luis Posada Carriles so he can be judged and sanctioned for the crimes he has committed that still go unpunished", said Alarcon. Earlier this month, a three-judge panel of the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta threw out convictions and sentences from the men''s trial in Miami, citing prejudicial publicity. Many Cuban immigrants opposed to Cuban President Fidel Castro and his communist government reside in Miami. Posada Carriles is fighting extradition from the US to Venezuela where he is accused of masterminding the bombing of a Cuban airliner in 1976. CALL FOR SUPPORT: SLANTED MAGAZINE AND EXPOSITION www.slanted.de/cuba Show the world's extraordinary Cuban poster designers and artists, published and exposed by Slanted, an independent magazine about typography, photography, graphic design and illustration. First of all, thank you for taking the time to review our project, we appreciate very much that you're spending some time with CUBAN POSTER ART -- The New Generation. ABOUT THIS PROJECT We discovered the amazing power of Cuban poster art. First, Natalie Seisser, a graphic designer from Paris, came up to see us this year in April to show striking work from her Cuban designer friends. Lars Harmsen (editor of Slanted) went to Cuba this summer and met some of Natalie's friends -- as well as other artists and photographers. All of them are creating beautiful work, more analogue than digital, with a very human and warm touch. How could we create wider awareness for their amazing work and give those artists an international voice? As editor of Slanted magazine, together with Markus Lange and Falko Gerlinghoff (Burg Giebichenstein, University of Art and Design), we thought it would be great to publish this special issue: CUBAN POSTER ART -- The New Generation.
Beyond cigars, American old timer cars and Che Guevara T-shirts Cuba has a strong tradition of graphic design. From the fifties until the embargo the county has been a major center for new ideas and creative design experiments. Nowadays the contrast is striking as there is in Cuba barely any publicity billboards, packaging, flyers, stickers, brands ... They have all been replaced over the years by government propaganda posters but against all odds the spirit of creativity remains still much alive. Since the nineties a new generation of graphic designers has emerged and they hold on tight to the course of history. They are unfortunately still unknown and they strive to survive in a complicated economic and political situation without any means to be recognized by the rest of the world. HISTORICAL CONTEXT During over fifty years of revolutionary power, the history and evolution of Cuba are connected to images and pictures. The society is based on culture and puts forward its creativity and diversity. Cuban poster production has reached its summit between the years 1965 and 1975. Artists and Graphic Designers have created their own efficient graphic language in order to educate and convey revolutionary ideals. The history of Cuban Graphic Design has seen then the birth of its masters.
From the eighties, Cuba has suffered many economic difficulties due to the deterioration of exchanges with the USSR. The poster is as a consequence no more a government priority and material means become scarce in the workshops and orders are rare. A majority of Graphic Designers decide to leave the country and part of the island culture disappear with them.
In 1984, the government opens the first Graphic Design School in the country, the ISDI (Superior Institute of Industrial Design) with the target to train professionals in the Design and Communication sector. Five years later, the first Graphic Designers graduate, start to work and boost the poster production. Little by little the organisms work again with this new generation and the history of Cuban Graphic Design is revived. GOAL: PUBLICATION AND EXPOSITION This special issue of Slanted, CUBAN POSTER ART -- The New Generation, will be released in spring 2013, attracting attention to an international level. This project has the goal to raise € 10,000 (≈ $ 13,000) additionally to our usual budget.
We want to cover expenses we usually don't have: 1. For an exhibitions with original silkscreened posters, touring from city to city. Shipping, organization and insurances for first shows in Berlin, Leipzig and Paris will cost € 4,000 (≈ $ 5,167) 2. Translations: The magazine will be bilingual (Spanish/English). With a volume of 320 pages we will have to translate all interviews and texts either to English or Spanish. This needs to be done professionally and will be € 4,500 (≈ $ 5,813) 3. Additional print of 1,000 copies that will be shipped to Cuba. Whoever has been in Cuba knows how hungry Cubans are for good printed matter. Extra printing: € 1,500 (≈ $ 1.938) This project funded will enable us to share what we see as being an extraordinary inside view into Cuban design, reflecting the reality of life in Cuba and the beauty that lies within its complexity. When I turned 12, my aunt gave me my first camera, thus beginning my life-long career of documenting musicians at work. Now I had the instrument (the camera), the music background, and familiar compelling subjects (performing jazz musicians). Renowned jazz photographer Herb Snitzer was working in New York for the old Metronome and Down Beat magazines. Inspired by a Life Magazine assignment to England in 1962 to document the innovative Summerhill School, he came back so enthused that he established the Lewis-Wadhams School, just across Lake Champlain from Vermont. I was one of the students always at Herb's side, both in his photography classes and in the darkroom, when he worked on his own frequent music assignments. As classes were not compulsory, I was able to make a major time commitment towards my budding passion for music photography. When finished with school I returned to New York City, where I worked in custom black and white labs honing my printing skills, and making my own living; I was not yet sixteen years old. Eventually, many recording companies relocated to Los Angeles, and in 1978 I followed. I lived and worked there until the late 1980’s, eventually moving to Vermont, where I make my home. Knowing musicians as family, as opposed to "stars" and public personalities, has afforded me access to relaxed relationships and photo opportunities. My roster of shots includes many used for record covers and promotion/publicity shots, which the artists themselves request. Throughout fifty-plus years of photographing musicians, I’ve gained the greatest pleasure and pride from being told by artists whom I've documented exclaiming, ... “I can hear my music in your pictures”! Although based on a mountaintop, I still get calls to come shoot special events or recording and concert appearances in New York. I had a music history radio program weekly since 1998 for nine years, with an occasional interview or live recording. All programs were catalogued and archived. www.creativemusicphotography.com facebook/creativemusicphotography

The official added that there were concerns that publicity about the agreement would harm their efforts. But the reports from Israel were vehemently denied by Jews in Cuba. Jose Miller, speaking outside the Great Synagogue of the Hebrew Community of Cuba, insisted the claims were false. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "A Cuban Jew who wants to immigrate to Israel goes to the Canadian embassy and presents his request. This request is sent to Israel, and it is either approved, or not approved." SUPER CAPTION: Jose Miller, president of Hebrew Community of Cuba Over 13-hundred Jews remain on the island. Of those, 200 are said to have expressed an interest in moving to Israel as well. But the president of the Jewish Community House of Cuba claims there is no secrecy attached to the moves. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "This has been going on since March of 1995 - without any secrecy. That they have not wanted to publicise this before, or that in Israel, they thought that no one would have benefited from publicity; well, that's their problem, and not because this has been kept secret." SUPER CAPTION: Jose Miller, president of Hebrew Community of Cuba Dozens of Cuban Jewish families have emigrated to Israel and other countries in recent years. Israel and Cuba do not have diplomatic ties. But Fidel Castro is known to want to improve Cuba's image abroad and encourage Washington to consider lifting the nearly 40-year-old economic embargo that has hurt Cuba's economy. So far, the Cuban government has not commented on the issue. Jewish leader have expressed fears the reports could harm the Jewish community's ongoing fundraising attempts for the renovation of three synagogues in Havana. They also fear the revelations could harm the efforts of others who want to move to Israel. Castro, accused of supplying arms to Palestinian terror groups, has long been hostile to Israel. While he never cracked down on Jews, the country officially embraced atheism in 1962, forcing many to shy away from public worship. In the early 1990s, however, the constitution was changed to make the government secular. For the first time, believers of all faiths were accepted in the Communist Party. Most Cuban Jews are descendants of Polish and Russian Jews who fled pogroms at the turn of the century. While many in the Jewish community initially supported Castro after his 1959 revolution, many left Cuba after he turned toward socialism and their businesses were expropriated or shut down. But some stories escape the fiercely guarded classified files... stories that become legends. This is one such story... a story that shook the very foundation of this dark world. In a government employees' neighbourhood in New Delhi, there lived a rugged, handsome and mysterious bachelor about whom his neighbours knew nothing. That was because he was India's top spy, an officer with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India's external intelligence agency. This man was known even in official corridors as TIGER (Salman Khan). Tiger is sent on a relatively easy and safe mission to Dublin, Ireland to observe a scientist of Indian origin who is suspected of sharing his research findings with the Pakistan defence establishment. Tiger attempts to meet the scientist but is not successful. He tries to befriend the scientist's part time home caretaker, Zoya (Katrina Kaif). As Tiger begins to get closer to Zoya... he begins to discover his human side. For the first time in his life Tiger falls in love... What follows is a tumultuous journey that Tiger and Zoya embark upon, battling the dark world of intelligence and espionage that forbids its soldiers from falling in love... "

urviving on the dance floor Many Cuban exiles live in New York City and the nearby Latino neighborhoods in New Jersey. Some of them are the central characters in "Dame la mano". When the Spanish rulers abolished slavery in the mid-19th century, the true Afro-Cuban rumba that we know today emerged: its rhythmic and harmonic phrases refer to ancient African songs and prayers, mixed with Spanish musical influences. Rumba as a necessity For Cubans dancing is one of life's necessities, like walking, eating, making love and breathing. This inner drive creates a strong zest for life. Dancing means much more than just 'a night out' --for the characters in this film it's their oxygen. It's amazing how full of vitality they are and how music and dance helps them forget their day-to-day worries and even seems to ward off fate. Besides their heart, there's something else beating: the clave, the ancient rhythm that shapes all Afro-Cuban music. Living in exile, our characters' need for rumba is even stronger. Some are laborers, others are musicians and dancers and each of them has a close connection to La Esquina Habanera. Many of them have been forced to leave one or more relatives behind in Cuba. Some talk about this in a matter-of-fact way, as if they are resigned to their fate, while others openly express their grief or melancholy. Give me your hand During the film you will get to know them and experience a vibrant rumba night at La Esquina. People of all ages and from all social backgrounds present an extraordinary sight: gold necklaces, shiny dancing shoes, wigs, mini-skirts, white hats, sunglasses, oversized sweaters, winter hats and low-cut dresses. There are dancers, musicians and regular visitors: Rafaela, a voluptuous 62-year-old, who works long hours in a large kitchen and prefers dancing to eating; Tony, the club owner who made his dream come true by creating a place for the rumba in New Jersey; Leonardo, a mechanic who puts in over 150 hours of overtime each month and always listens to music to dispel his melancholy; David, the musical director of the house orchestra who still remembers the 'prison rumbas' from his time behind bars -- because he refused to go the war in Angola; Pedro, a skilled dancer who had to scrape together a living by working as a gigolo when he'd just arrived in the States; Karim, the choreographer and dancer who's been 'misleading' her greatest enemy -- cancer -- by dancing for seven years now. These people cherish the song "Dame la mano" -- that's sung in La Esquina: "Give me your hand, give me your hand dear bosom friend, I sway, I can't stand..." It's music and dance that keep these people on their feet.
